Shimabara, Nagasaki / 島原城
Shimabara Castle
A castle built over more than seven years from 1618 by Matsukura Shigemasa, also called Moritake Castle as it was built on a small hill. It was the seat of four clans for 253 years until it was sold off after 1873; the five-storey keep was rebuilt in 1964. Today the keep houses a museum of Christian history, including materials on the Shimabara Rebellion, and the turrets hold the Kitamura Seibo Memorial Museum and a folk museum. In early February nearly 300 plum trees bloom with the keep behind them.
