Mt. Fugen (Unzen)

Fugendake (1,359 m) is the main peak of Mt. Unzen; near the summit you can see up close Heisei Shinzan (1,483 m), Japan's newest mountain. The mountain changes through the seasons and is especially fine in the autumn-leaf season. Heisei Shinzan is still a restricted zone, so Fugendake is loved as the highest mountain in Nagasaki that can be climbed. Since April 2026, the Environment Ministry's "Unzen Sangakutai" digital stamp rally across ten Unzen peaks is running.

Getting there: About 3-4 hours round trip on foot from Nita Pass (trail via Mt. Myoken; the Unzen Ropeway can be used as far as Myoken); from the Unzen bus stop (Shimatetsu or prefectural bus), about 1 hour one way on foot to Nita Pass (via the Ikenohara area and trail).

Parking: Unzen Nita Pass car park (Nita Pass loop road, conservation contribution from 100 yen); in busy seasons such as the Miyama-kirishima azaleas and autumn leaves, or when starting before the loop road opens (from 8:00), use the Myoken, Nodake or Yadake car parks in the Ikenohara area (about 30-40 minutes on foot one way to Nita Pass).
