Shimabara, Nagasaki / 湧水庭園 四明荘
Shimeiso Spring Water Garden
A villa built in the late Meiji period, named "Shimeiso" for its fine views in all four directions. Colourful carp swim in the pond fed by about 3,000 tonnes of spring water a day, and the garden is planted with red pines, maples and more. The rooms jut out over the pond on two sides, so looking down on the garden from the raised house, rooms and garden become one.
