Minamishimabara, Nagasaki / 原城跡

Hara Castle Ruins

Hara Castle is said to have been built in 1496 by the lord Arima Takazumi; surrounded on three sides by the Ariake Sea, about 4 km around, it was a natural fortress also called "Hikure-jo". After Matsukura Shigemasa built Shimabara Castle under the one-castle-per-province rule, it was abandoned, and in 1637 rebels in the "Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion" held out in the ruined castle. It became a national historic site on May 30, 1938, and the main enclosure has a statue of Amakusa Shiro by sculptor Kitamura Seibo. It is a component of the World Heritage "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region".

Getting there

Shimatetsu bus for Kazusa Kaisuiyokujo-mae, about 1 hour from Shimabara Station or about 50 minutes from Shimabara port; or the bus for Shimabara-ekimae, about 20 minutes from Kuchinotsu port; get off at Harajo-mae and walk 15 minutes; by car about 40 minutes from Shimabara port or about 15 minutes from Kuchinotsu port.

Parking

Use the Otemaguchi car park (beside Harajo Onsen Masago); the Harajo-ato car park on Route 251 is closed for construction of the World Heritage centre; coaches may use the turning area in front of the Ninomaru information centre for drop-off only. About 900 m (about 15 minutes on foot) from the car park to the main enclosure; rental bicycles (paid) at Harajo Onsen Masago.
