Shinshiro, Aichi / 四谷の千枚田
Yotsuya Senmaida Rice Terraces
On the slopes of Mt. Kurakake, a mountain hamlet has rice terraces described as one of Japan's three great stone-walled terraces. Stretching from 220 to 420 m above sea level, about 400 paddies are still farmed by 20 households, and local people look after them as a legacy from their forebears. Clear water springs from the mountainside and is divided into three streams that water all the terraces, which are home to many plants and animals.

By car, from Toyokawa IC (Tomei Expressway) head north towards Shinshiro: turn left at the Arumi signal on Route 151, right at the Choraku signal on Route 257, left at the Ebi signal, and right at the Ebi-ike-kaizu signal before the Iname Tunnel. By train, from JR Nagoya change at Toyohashi to the Iida Line to Hon-Nagashino, then take the Toyotetsu Bus Taguchi Line to Takiue and walk 40 minutes (bus services may change).
