Mt. Horaiji and Horaiji Temple
Mt. Horaiji, famous for autumn leaves, is known as home of the Japanese scops owl, the prefectural bird called the "voice of the Buppouso"; the whole mountain is a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. It is a sacred mountain said to have been opened 1,300 years ago by the hermit Rishu, with the old temple Horaiji halfway up. The approach from the foot has 1,425 stone steps, with sights such as the Kasa-sugi cedar, about 800 years old and 60 m tall. The Niomon gate, built by Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1651, is a national Important Cultural Property.
