Yakachi River (Red Spider Lilies)
Handa is the birthplace of Niimi Nankichi, author of the famous children's story "Gongitsune", used in school textbooks; the countryside around the Yakachi River, the story's setting, looks just like the tale. Every year in late September more than 3 million red spider lilies, grown by local people, bloom along about 1.5 km of the river banks, covering them like a red carpet. The planting was started in 1990 after a line in the story: "the red spider lilies bloom like a red cloth".
