Urakami Church
A church in the Urakami district, one of Nagasaki's sacred places for Christians, planned by believers who gained freedom when the ban on Christianity was lifted. Dedicated in 1914 as a brick Romanesque cathedral, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945 except for a few walls. The present building was rebuilt in concrete in 1959 and refaced with brick tiles in 1980 to resemble the original; one of the Angelus bells that survived the blast still rings. The parish hall has an exhibition room of atomic-bomb relics.
