Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum
On February 5, 1597, under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's ban on Christianity, 26 Christians were executed in Japan for the first time. This museum was built in 1962 on Nishizaka Hill, the place of their martyrdom, for the 100th anniversary of their canonisation, and is an official Catholic pilgrimage site known around the world. It introduces the history of Christianity in Japan from the arrival of St. Francis Xavier to the Meiji era, with items such as the painting "Snow Maria" linked to the hidden Christians; the monument with life-size bronzes of the 26 is by the sculptor Funakoshi Yasutake.
