Dejima
"Dejima", an artificial island built on the orders of the Tokugawa shogunate. Completed in 1636, for about 200 years it was Japan's only window open to the West. Since Nagasaki City began restoring it in 1951, 16 buildings and scenes have been brought back to how they were, and the Dejima Omotemon Bridge completed in 2017 lets you cross in and out as in the past. There are rooms recreating Edo-period life, guided tours by history staff dressed as gatekeepers, and kimono rental.
