Dutch Slope (Oranda-zaka)
Stone-paved slopes in the Higashi-Yamate district lined with Western-style houses. In Nagasaki, the only place in Japan where trade took place in the Edo period, non-Asian foreigners were called "Oranda-san" even after Japan opened, perhaps from the influence of the Dutch living on Dejima, and all the slopes in the foreign settlement are thought to have been called "Oranda-zaka". Beside the stone marker is the light-blue Higashi-Yamate Ko No. 13 House, a Meiji-era foreign residence open free of charge with a cafe space.
