Asuka, Nara / 橘寺
Tachibanadera Temple
Its founding date is unknown; it first appears in records in 680. Said to be the birthplace of Prince Shotoku and one of the seven temples he founded, it was once a great temple with 66 halls. Today only a few buildings remain, such as the main hall (Taishiden) rebuilt in the Edo period. Treasures include a Muromachi-period seated statue of Prince Shotoku (Important Cultural Property) and the "Nimenseki", a stone carved with two faces of good and evil. From early September to late October about 150 cotton rose and confederate rose shrubs bloom in the grounds.
