Asuka, Nara / 岡寺
Oka-dera Temple
Founded in Tenji 2 (663) by the priest Gien, who received Prince Kusakabe's Oka Palace; its formal name is Ryugai-ji. On the hillside stand an Edo-period study hall and Nio gate (both Important Cultural Properties) and the main hall. The principal image, a seated Nyoirin Kannon from the Tenpyo period (Important Cultural Property), is 4.6 m tall, Japan's largest clay statue. It is the 7th temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage.
