Asuka-dera Temple
Completed in Suiko 4 (596) at the wish of Soga no Umako, a protector of Buddhism, as Japan's first full-scale temple. Most buildings burned in the Kamakura period and the present main hall was rebuilt in the Edo period. Its principal image, the bronze seated Shaka Nyorai (Important Cultural Property) known as the Asuka Daibutsu, dates from the Asuka period and is Japan's oldest Buddhist statue.
