Oshi Castle Ruins and Gyoda City Local Museum
Oshi Castle, counted among the seven great castles of Kanto, was built in the Bunmei era of the Muromachi period and is known as the "floating castle" that withstood Ishida Mitsunari's flooding siege during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Kanto; the story inspired the film "The Floating Castle". Built on low wetland between the Tone and Ara rivers using islands and natural levees, it was praised as impregnable. The present three-storey turret, rebuilt in 1988, is an exhibition room of the Gyoda City Local Museum on the site of the main enclosure.
