Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens
The Fumoto district, representing Chiran, "the little Kyoto of Satsuma": streets lined with neatly clipped hedges of podocarpus and tea, and gardens that borrow the view of Mt. Hahagatake, open to visitors. With winding streets, gates standing before the gardens and gardens cherished since the Edo period, it is a representative "fumoto" (samurai settlement) of Kagoshima, selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (18.6 ha); the seven gardens open to the public are national places of scenic beauty.
