Ibusuki, Kagoshima / 開聞岳
Mt. Kaimon
An active volcano 924 m high, a double volcano with a lava dome on a stratovolcano. Its neat summit and gentle ridges earned it the name "Satsuma Fuji", and it is counted among the "Nihon Hyakumeizan" (100 mountains of Japan). With no other mountains around, its cone can be seen from most of southern Satsuma. From the top you can see Kirishima, Sakurajima and Lake Ikeda to the north and Yakushima and the Mishima islands to the south; the climb of about 5 km one way takes about 3 hours.
