Ibusuki, Kagoshima / 池田湖
Lake Ikeda
Kyushu's largest caldera lake, formed by ancient volcanic activity: 15 km around and up to 233 m deep, born about 5,700 years ago and shaped into its present form by six eruptions, counting the surrounding area. Many giant eels up to 1.8 m long and 20 kg, a natural monument of Ibusuki, live here, and the mysterious creature "Issie" is said to live in it. Flowerbeds on the shore bloom through the year, with rape blossoms in full bloom in January.
