Fukuyama, Hiroshima / 阿伏兎観音／磐台寺観音堂
Abuto Kannon (Bandaiji Kannon Hall)
At the tip of the Numakuma Peninsula in south-east Fukuyama, this Kannon hall juts out from a cliff over the sea, its vermilion pillars and beams vivid against the blue sky and sea. Long known as a scenic spot, it was painted by Utagawa Hiroshige in "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces". The veranda around the hall slopes slightly towards the sea and has low railings, giving thrilling views of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The present hall is said to have been built by the warlord Mori Terumoto and is an Important Cultural Property.
