Aomori, Aomori / 善知鳥神社

Uto Shrine

Said to be the birthplace of Aomori City. When the area was called Uto village, its ruler Uto Chunagon Yasukata is said to have founded it, enshrining the three Munakata goddesses. It was rebuilt in 807 by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and became the chief shrine of Aomori. In the grounds is a pond left from what was once a large marsh, and the spring water "Ryujinsui" behind the worship hall. It is linked to the woodblock artist Shiko Munakata, whose works it holds, and has many historic monuments, including a stone marking the end of the Oshu Kaido road and a haiku stone of Matsuo Basho.
