Usa, Oita / 宇佐神宮
Usa Jingu Shrine
Known nationwide as the head shrine of the more than 40,000 Hachiman shrines in Japan. It is said to have begun in 725 (Jinki 2) when the first hall enshrining Hachiman Okami was built, and is closely linked to the Rokugo Manzan culture of the Kunisaki Peninsula. In the vast grounds surrounded by primeval forest stand the three main halls in the Hachiman style (National Treasures), bridges, a Noh stage and a treasure hall; about 100 cherry trees bloom in spring and lotuses in summer.
