Gamagori, Aichi / 竹島水族館
Takeshima Aquarium
One of Japan's most historic aquariums, full of creative touches born of the wish that visitors "have fun". It shows about 100 kinds of rare deep-sea creatures, including giant spider crabs, caught by local fishermen off Mie and Wakayama. There are sea lion and capybara shows, and the "Sawarin Pool" where you can touch deep-sea creatures, crabs and sharks. Handwritten, witty explanations throughout have drawn nationwide attention to this small aquarium.
