Otsu, Shiga / 近江神宮
Omi Jingu Shrine
A shrine to Emperor Tenji, the 38th emperor, standing on the site of his ancient capital Omi Otsu-no-Miya (Otsukyo), at the foot of the hills on the west shore of Lake Biwa. Its buildings, in the "Omi" and "Showa" styles, are registered cultural properties as a representative of modern shrine architecture. It is known for the water clock (rokoku), Hyakunin Isshu karuta and yabusame horseback archery; the grounds have the Clock Museum, a water clock and a sundial. Because the first poem of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is by Emperor Tenji, competitive karuta tournaments are often held here.
