Otsu, Shiga / 三井寺（園城寺）
Miidera Temple (Onjoji)
The head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect. A sacred spring said to have been used for the birth baths of Emperors Tenji, Tenmu and Jito gave it the name "Mii-no-tera", later "Miidera". Many halls stand in the grounds, including the National Treasure Kondo, the Kannon-do (14th stop of the Saigoku pilgrimage), the Shakado and Toin, and it holds more than 100 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Sights include the "Evening Bell of Mii", one of the Eight Views of Omi, and Benkei's dragged bell.
