Nanzen-ji Temple
Head temple of the Rinzai Nanzen-ji school, founded in 1291 (Shoo 4) when Emperor Kameyama gave his detached palace. The Sanmon gate (Important Cultural Property) was donated by Todo Takatora; the Hojo (National Treasure) holds the famous "Tiger Drinking Water" by Kano Tan'yu, and its front garden, "Tiger Cubs Crossing", is a representative dry landscape garden of the early Edo period. The Suirokaku brick aqueduct of the Lake Biwa Canal (1888) runs through the grounds.
