Nagoya Castle and Hommaru Palace

Construction began in 1610 under Tokugawa Ieyasu as the last step toward unifying the country; it was the residence of the Owari Tokugawa family, one of the three Tokugawa branch houses. Most buildings were destroyed in the air raid of May 1945, and only 6, such as the southwest and southeast corner turrets, survive from the Owari domain era. The five-storey main keep with golden shachi and the small keep were rebuilt in 1959. The Hommaru Palace, once the first castle building designated a National Treasure, was restored faithfully from records, drawings, old photos and wall paintings from 2009 and completed in 2018.
