Izumo, Shimane / 木綿街道
Momen Kaido (Cotton Road)
The Hirata area, north-east of the Izumo plain, prospered as a market town from the canals from the west shore of Lake Shinji, and in the Edo period as a collection point for cotton. The L-shaped street of Shinmachi, Kataharamachi and Miyanomachi is lined with gabled plastered houses with namako walls and Izumo lattices, and along the Funakawa canal you can see old landing places and "kakedashi" water steps.
