Izumo, Shimane / 出雲大社
Izumo Taisha (Izumo Oyashiro)
An ancient shrine whose founding is recorded in the Kojiki, said to be Japan's oldest history book; until the early Meiji period it was called Kizuki Taisha. Its main deity is Okuninushi-no-Okami, familiar as "Daikoku-sama". The present main hall (National Treasure), built in 1744, is about 24 m high and is in the Taisha-zukuri style, the oldest style of shrine architecture in Japan; according to shrine tradition it was once about 96 m high. At Izumo Taisha, worshippers bow twice, clap four times and bow once more.
