Inuyama, Aichi / 博物館明治村

Museum Meiji-mura

An open-air museum displaying more than 60 historic buildings, mainly from the Meiji era. It was opened in 1965 by two schoolmates, the architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and Motoo Tsuchikawa, then president of Nagoya Railroad, to save Meiji buildings disappearing in the years of rapid growth, and marked its 50th anniversary in 2015. The most popular building is the central entrance of the Imperial Hotel, completed in 1923 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which took about 17 years to reconstruct. It is also a location for films and NHK morning dramas. The site is very large; as a guide, seeing only the Important Cultural Properties takes about 3.5 hours.

Getting there: By car, 3 km from Komaki-higashi IC (Chuo Expressway), 6 km from the Kamiokuchi 2-chome junction on Route 41, 5 km from the Myochicho-kita junction on Route 19 (via the Komaki-higashi IC road). By train, from Meitetsu Nagoya to Meitetsu Inuyama, then Gifu Bus to the Meiji-mura stop; or the highway bus from Nagoya Station / Meitetsu Bus Center to the Meiji-mura stop.
