Arao, Kumamoto / 万田坑
Manda Pit
A pit of the Miike coal mine that produced high-quality coal from the Meiji to the early Showa period, supporting Japan's modernisation; it was registered as a World Heritage site in July 2015 as part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution". You can see the brick buildings preserved as they were, the pit mouth through which miners went between underground and the surface, and the machine room with its huge machinery.
