Kawagoe Kurazukuri Townscape and Toki-no-Kane Bell Tower
Kawagoe still keeps its "kurazukuri" townscape of clay-walled storehouse buildings, an ingenious fireproof style developed as Edo townhouses to stop fires spreading; it preserves a look of Edo that can no longer be seen in Tokyo. It was selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in December 1999. The Toki-no-Kane bell tower, said to have first been built between 1627 and 1634 by Sakai Tadakatsu, lord of Kawagoe Castle, has told the time since the early Edo period and is the symbol of "Koedo" Kawagoe; the present three-storey tower, about 16 m high, was rebuilt in the year after the great fire of 1893. It is one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan".
