Miyoshi, Tokushima / 祖谷のかずら橋
Iya Kazurabashi Vine Bridge
A vine bridge in the remote Iya valley, carrying the sad legends of the Heike clan. Made of shirakuchi-kazura vines (about 6 tonnes), it is 45 m long, 2 m wide and 14 m above the water, and was once the only means of crossing in these deep mountain valleys; it is rebuilt every three years and is a national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property (1955). About a minute's walk away, near Biwa Falls, steps lead down to the riverbank and a path runs along the Iya River.
