Imakoyasan (Ryugeji Temple and Tanjo Shrine)
A sacred site said to have been opened by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) about 1,200 years ago. Ryugeji Temple and Tanjo Shrine preserve the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism and are a prefectural historic site; in the Heian period this was the centre of the Ota estate of Mt. Koya. Cherry blossoms line the approach in spring, and in autumn the whole mountain around the Kono-ike pond turns red, with the vermilion Kono-hashi bridge. There is a cafe in a restored Edo-period temple lodging, walks to the Kojoyama observatory and the 88 stone Buddhas, and five National Important Cultural Properties.
