Wakasa, Tottori / 不動院岩屋堂
Fudoin Iwayado
Built in a natural rock cave and also called the "Iwaya-do" (cave hall), this hall is said to date from the Daido era (806-810). The temple was once part of Myokenzan Jinkoji, a large temple with 150 koku of land, but it burned in the war when Toyotomi Hideyoshi attacked, and this hall is said to be all that survived. Its principal image, the Fudo Myoo revered as the "Kurokawa Fudo" of Inaba, is said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi at 33. Like the Nageiredo of Mitokusan Sanbutsuji, it is a stage-style building set in a rock cave.
