Takahashi, Okayama / 備中松山城
Bitchu Matsuyama Castle
The only mountain castle in Japan whose keep survives, one of the 12 original keeps from the Edo period. Huge rock walls over 10 m high surround it, keeping the look of an impregnable castle. Recently it has become popular as "the castle in the sky floating on a sea of clouds"; to photograph it, go to the sea-of-clouds observatory at dawn in the season from about September to April.

About 10 minutes from JR Bitchu-Takahashi Station to Fuigo Pass (8th station) by shared taxi (1,000 yen per person one way; book by 17:00 the day before), then about 20 minutes on foot to the keep.
