Takahashi, Okayama / 吹屋ふるさと村
Fukiya Furusato Village
A town in the Chugoku Mountains built by wealthy merchants who made great fortunes producing bengara (red iron oxide pigment) and its raw material, rouha. The red townscape unified by reddish-brown Sekishu roof tiles and bengara-painted lattices is striking, and the merchants' elaborately designed houses are worth seeing. Sights such as the former Fukiya Elementary School and the Sasaune mine tunnel remain, and the town is a Japan Heritage site as "the birthplace of Japan Red". Workshops making handkerchiefs and bags with bengara paint are popular.
