Tokushima, Tokushima / 阿波十郎兵衛屋敷

Awa Jurobei Yashiki (Puppet Theatre House)

The site of the house of Bando Jurobei, an Edo-period village headman who was the model for the puppet play "Keisei Awa no Naruto", where you can enjoy "Awa Ningyo Joruri", a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Puppet plays are performed every day on an open stage modelled on the outdoor "rural stages" found at many Tokushima shrines, and exhibits and videos of puppet heads, costumes and the chanters' and shamisen players' tools tell its history. The "Crane and Tortoise Garden" from the Genroku era remains.
