To-ji Temple (Kyo-o-gokoku-ji)
Head temple of the Toji Shingon school, founded in 796 for the protection of the nation when the capital Heian-kyo was built, and granted to Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in 823. The lecture hall holds 21 statues forming a "three-dimensional mandala", including the National Treasure Five Great Wisdom Kings; the five-storey pagoda (National Treasure), rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu, is 55 m high, the tallest in Japan. Part of the World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
