Sanjusangen-do (Rengeo-in)
A hall 120 m long from north to south, with 33 bays between the pillars of the inner sanctuary, rare in wooden architecture anywhere (National Treasure). Founded in 1164 (Chokan 2) at the wish of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa and donated by Taira no Kiyomori, it houses a large seated Thousand-armed Kannon surrounded by 1,000 life-size standing Kannon and 28 attendant deities, all National Treasures. Tendai sect.
