Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Head temple of the Kita-Hosso sect on Mt. Otowa, founded in 778 and part of the World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto"; its main hall (a National Treasure), rebuilt in 1633, is famous for the wooden stage over the cliff.

Getting there

From Gion-Shijo (Keihan) or Kyoto-Kawaramachi (Hankyu) Station, take a city bus to Kiyomizu-michi or Gojozaka, then about 10 minutes on foot.

No parking at the temple; the city-run Kiyomizuzaka car park is nearby. It can be crowded, so public transport or taxis are recommended.

Accessibility

Vehicles can enter via the Chawanzaka access road, and a step-free route loops the grounds from near the main hall; accessible toilets are available. No wheelchair loan. Pushchairs can use the same route.
