Tenmonkan
The busiest downtown district in southern Kyushu, named after "Meijikan" (also called Tenmonkan), a facility for astronomical observation and calendar-making built in 1779 by Lord Shimazu Shigehide. Shops serve local food such as black-pork tonkatsu, Kagoshima ramen and "shirokuma" shaved ice, with cafes and souvenir shops; the streets have arcades, so you can eat and shop without getting wet on rainy days.
