Statue of Saigo Takamori
Saigo Takamori, who made great contributions to the Meiji Restoration such as the bloodless surrender of Edo Castle and the founding of the Meiji government, suddenly resigned and returned to Kagoshima; he later fought the government army in the Satsuma Rebellion, was defeated and took his own life at Shiroyama. This statue was made over eight years by Ando Teru, a Kagoshima-born sculptor who made "Hachiko" in Shibuya, to mark the 50th anniversary of his death, and completed on May 23, 1937. It stands 8 m high (statue 5.257 m) in the uniform of Japan's first army general. A photo spot is set up across the road.
