Kagoshima Castle Goromon Gate
Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle, the residence of the Shimazu clan begun around 1601 by Iehisa, later the first lord of the domain, consisted of a mountain castle behind (Shiroyama) and a residence at its foot. The "Goromon" gate at the front of the residence was lost in a fire in 1873 (Meiji 6) and rebuilt in 2020 as the largest castle gate in Japan. The gate and stone walls are lit up every day from sunset to 22:00, changing with the time and season.
