Taya Cave (Josenji Temple)
A huge man-made cave in the grounds of Josenji, said to date from the Kamakura period: about 570 m long on three levels, a hand-dug underground space unlike any other in Japan. Carrying a candle, you walk past chisel marks and about 250 reliefs carved on the walls and ceilings, including mandalas and the eighteen arhats. Its formal name is Tayasan Yugado, a training cave of esoteric Shingon Buddhism still used for practice.
