Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo-mioya Jinja)
One of Kyoto's oldest shrines, founded before the Heian period and revered as the first shrine of Yamashiro Province, enshrining Kamo-taketsunumi-no-mikoto and Tamayorihime-no-mikoto. In the vast grounds of the Tadasu no Mori forest (National Historic Site) stand two main halls (National Treasures) and 53 Important Cultural Property buildings; part of the World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto". The Aoi Matsuri on May 15 recreates a courtly procession.
