Heguri, Nara / 信貴山朝護孫子寺

Shigisan Chogosonshiji Temple

Founded by Prince Shotoku in 587, it drew the faith of warriors from the Heian period. In the Warring States period Matsunaga Hisahide built Shigisan Castle; attacked by Oda Nobunaga, Hisahide took his own life and the temple burned, and it was later restored by Toyotomi Hideyori. The mountain's origin lies in the legend that the prince saw Bishamonten appear in the year, day and hour of the tiger, so papier-mache tigers can be seen all over the grounds, where dozens of halls stand, and the main hall looks out over the Nara Basin. The National Treasure "Shigisan Engi" scrolls are shown for only about two weeks from late October.
