Yakushi-ji Temple
A temple vowed by Emperor Tenmu for the recovery of his empress (later Empress Jito), completed in Fujiwara-kyo and moved to its present site in Yoro 2 (718). Fire in the 16th century left only the East Pagoda (National Treasure), the sole original structure; since the Kondo in 1976 (Showa 51), the Hakuho-style buildings have been rebuilt one after another. Registered as a World Heritage Site ("Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara") in December 1998.
