Saito, Miyazaki / 西都原古墳群
Saitobaru Burial Mounds
One of Japan's largest groups of burial mounds, recognised as Japan Heritage, with over 300 mounds scattered across a plateau about 2.6 km east-west and 4.2 km north-south. The area is a park, coloured by cherry blossoms and rape blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer and cosmos in autumn. "Oni no Iwaya" is the only mound in the group with an open corridor-style stone chamber that can be entered, and the Saitobaru Archaeological Museum treats the whole site as a field museum.

About 15 minutes from Saito IC on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway; about 60 minutes from JR Miyazaki Station by Miyazaki Kotsu bus towards Saito to the Saito Bus Center, then about 10 minutes by car.
