Ryoan-ji Temple
A Rinzai temple of the Myoshin-ji school, converted into a Zen temple in 1450 (Hotoku 2) by Hosokawa Katsumoto. Its famous rock garden (Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty) is a flat dry landscape garden enclosed on three sides by earthen walls, with 15 stones set in white sand. Part of the World Heritage "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" (1994).
