Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
Founded in Tenryaku 1 (947), the head shrine of about 12,000 Tenjin shrines across Japan, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and statesman of the Heian period. The main hall (National Treasure), built by Toyotomi Hideyori, is a Momoyama-period building in the yatsumune-zukuri style. On the 25th of every month the treasure hall opens and stalls line the grounds; it is also famous for plum blossoms and autumn leaves.
